Cloud Computing Overview
Cloud computing enables you to access remote files and applications over the Internet.
Cloud services are divided into two main categories:
* Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)
* Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)
Cloud services are different from traditional hosting in three ways:
* It is sold incrementally on-demand, typically by the minute, hour, or CPU cycles
* It is elastic -- a user can have as much or as little of a service as they want at any given time
* The service is fully managed by the provider (the consumer needs nothing but a personal computer and Internet access)
Cloud solutions can be private or public. Public clouds share a single resource (such as a server) among multiple users where a private cloud is used by a single user.
SaaS provides the capability for the for the consumer to access applications running on a cloud infrastructure. Applications can be accessed through a thin client interface such as a web browser, hand set, etc.
IaaS is the "computing" of "cloud computing" and the engine behind Saas. IaaS gives customers access to computer processing, storage, networks, and other computing resources that are hosted by the IaaS service provider.
