How to Develop a Secure Cloud Strategy in Six Steps

Posted on 03:00 by Unknown

How to Develop a Secure Cloud Strategy in Six Steps
By Vic Levinson

The first step is to start with the data. Data should be classified by risk and sensitivity levels according the business values. Obviously, high risk and highly sensitive data is at the core, less risky or non-sensitive data is at the periphery. Access is then determined in conjunction with this segregation and by regulation as well. Even though data may be deemed non-sensitive, there may be regulations in place to mean then it must have access to it controlled.

The second step is to address the organization's users. User's access should be determined by specific roles and also on a need to know basis. Beware of users with grandiose ideas of what their responsibilities are and of their own sense of importance. Sales may want access to finance records, but they may not really need it.

Thirdly, your cloud environment has to be the right fit for your enterprise- based on your data and your applications. Some line of business applications may not be applicable for the cloud based on their platform or specific functions within the business. At this point, your data determines if you are going to be on a public cloud, private cloud or hybrid. The IT department needs to build strategies that will take full advantage of the cloud that will meet the business objectives and be secure.

Determine your controls. With the proliferation of employee owned devices being used in business environments and consumer access to corporate information, IT has to contend with managing the various operating systems, devices, identities and applications. Take a data centric approach to identify and implement controls based on your data standards and cloud feasibility.

The fifth step is akin to adding the special sauce to a recipe. This is when you engage a cloud provider that has the expertise to bring it all together. This stage involves building a migration plan that is both flexible and secure.

As in all good recipes, the last step involves careful monitoring. Make sure that all of the controls are protecting the assets as they were intended to. Adjustments at this stage should be minor tweaks and not major policy changes.

Cloud technology is drastically changing how information is exchanged and stored. Businesses that quickly build and deploy these applications and take advantage of their benefits will reap the biggest rewards. To take the recipe analogy to its final stage, dig in and enjoy!

Cloud Computing Explained (By Kids)

Posted on 03:00 by Unknown
Trying to define cloud computing? The folks at Accenture had a brilliant idea: Ask the current and future users of the cloud – kids – what they think cloud computing is. Accenture captured the answers in this video, which is nothing short of brilliant. Take a look and here's some background.

Call them millenials, digital natives, future customers – whatever moniker you want – the kids Accenture interviewed to get their thoughts on the cloud were spot-on in their explanations. Not only that, it was clear they understand the benefits of the technology and firmly believe the cloud will be the de facto way of storing and accessing data and applications moving forward, in both consumer and business settings.

“In cloud computing, information’s not stored on my computer, it’s stored in the cloud,” said one savvy preteen. “And this cloud can be accessed by any computer, anywhere in the world.”

“It takes the work off a computer so it’s not bombarded with all this work and stuff,” noted another. “For a company, if they have all these different people working on computers, they can all log into one database that has all the programs they need to do their jobs.”

These explanations of the cloud, distributed workload and 24/7 collaboration may seem simplistic, but they’re in fact about as exact as you can get without a master’s degree in computer science. The fact these kids – who, as the video pointed out, have never experienced a world without iTunes or Amazon.com – “get” the cloud speaks volumes to the ubiquity and longevity of a technology that, all told, is maybe three years old.

From TalkinCloud.com

And of course....there's always this version too. Kids say the darndest things ....

What Can Cloud Computing Do For Your Business?

Posted on 01:30 by Unknown
Cloud computing is visualization of computing assets delivered on demand over the internet.

Cloud computing is ushering in a new way to run IT. As IT organizations investigate cloud capabilities, they are realizing that new sets of management requirements are needed to govern, manage and secure the evolving cloud-connected enterprise IT environment.

Cloud computing enables you to have on-demand access to a pool of dynamically configurable computing resources, which can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal effort or interaction, and which are allocated — or even paid for — based only on the amount used.

You are exploring different ways to set up, deliver and pay for this approach, depending upon you business needs. CA sees — and helps enable — many possibilities. These clouds of computer resources are often assumed to be external to your organization’s IT department, but they could also be set up within your company’s four walls (known as an “internal cloud”), or in a hybrid model that includes both internal and external compute resources. Cloud computing can utilize public cloud providers, or leverage only more restricted private clouds.

In whichever case, you will want different models of service, depending upon your needs for a given application or data center. These can vary from needing just basic servers or storage power delivered over the network (called “Infrastructure as a Service”), to needing application building blocks and tools (“Platform as a Service”), or even a complete application (“Software as a Service”).

Traditionally, we've always referred to the Internet as the virtual environment 'up there' somewhere above the physical ecosystem of hardware... Today, most services are offered to a global audience because the Cloud enables the distribution in a more time and cost efficient manner.

Also, because the Cloud will contain the functional parts of a 'software', you can access them from anywhere, regardless of your geographical location..

Google Apps is a great example of using the Cloud for SME organizations.

Cloud Computing Types

Posted on 01:30 by Unknown
The deployment model for Cloud Computing can be categorized as follows:

Public cloud

Public cloud or external cloud describes cloud computing in the traditional mainstream sense, whereby resources are dynamically provisioned on a fine-grained, self-service basis over the Internet, via web applications/web services, from an off-site third-party provider who shares resources and bills on a fine-grained utility computing basis.

Community cloud

A community cloud may be established where several organizations have similar requirements and seek to share infrastructure so as to realize some of the benefits of cloud computing. With the costs spread over fewer users than a public cloud (but more than a single tenant) this option is more expensive but may offer a higher level of privacy, security and/or policy compliance. Examples of community cloud include Google's "Gov Cloud".

Hybrid cloud

A hybrid cloud environment consisting of multiple internal and/or external providers "will be typical for most enterprises". By integrating multiple cloud services users may be able to ease the transition to public cloud services while avoiding issues such as PCI compliance.

Another perspective on deploying a web application in the cloud is using Hybrid Web Hosting, where the hosting infrastructure is a mix between Cloud Hosting for the web server, and Managed dedicated server for the database server.

Private cloud

Private cloud and internal cloud are neologisms that some vendors have recently used to describe offerings that emulate cloud computing on private networks. These (typically virtualisation automation) products claim to "deliver some benefits of cloud computing without the pitfalls", capitalising on data security, corporate governance, and reliability concerns. They have been criticized on the basis that users "still have to buy, build, and manage them" and as such do not benefit from lower up-front capital costs and less hands-on management, essentially "[lacking] the economic model that makes cloud computing such an intriguing concept".

Now that you know the different types of cloud computing you can make an educated decision of which best fits your needs. For help finding a cloud computing solution for business purposes simply request a free quote here....

What Does The Cloud Mean To You?

Posted on 02:30 by Unknown
Cloud means scalable computing resources... You can think of it as a large computer that you can scale up and down based your needs. In traditional computing, if you are not using your computer, it idles doing nothing. In cloud computing, that wasted resource is put to good use and you only pay for what you use.

There are a few other "clouds" which have nothing to do with this definition. Personal Cloud is one in which basically your data in all your personal devices is aggregated and made available from any device.

Some uses cases are personal storage in the cloud, although that's hardly the only use. Web servers can take advantage of the cloud to become highly available and geographically sensitive. Clouds can be used to rent computing for a one time intensive computing event.

But the general idea is, pay only for what you use, and repurpose what you don't for other tasks.

The main problems with cloud involve bandwidth, industry and country regulations, and portability. Also most applications need to be "modernized" to fully take advantage of the cloud fabric. Just taking your SaaS solution and putting it in the cloud doesn't mean you are a cloud solution, contrary to what some may think.

An interesting resource if you want to learn more about what it takes to create a large scale cloud solution is the Netflix technical blog. They are one of the few customers that survived the Amazon outage since they undestood what they were doing while designing the solution.

The Bottom Line Of Moving To Hosted Services In The Cloud

Posted on 02:35 by Unknown
The bottom line in all new or proposed service deployments - whether to a cloud service or not - are

a] the requirements specification and

b] the outcomes of the risk and impacts analyses.

Moving to hosted services in a/the cloud just because one can, or just because it's fashionable, or for any other reason than directly quantifiable need when measured against the potential risks and impacts of doing so is, quite simply, idiocy.

This is not to say that there are no benefits in such services, but too many businesses make such decisions for the wrong reasons and without adequate information about the alternatives or options and the constraints or limitations of each of those options informing their eventual decisions. This is very bad business practice and even worse IT practice.

Your IT expenditures are probably going to be reduced which is a good thing. Your overall perceived value might seem better. But beware of the new and very interesting single points of failure that are created.

More specifically if you outsource your IT, will your network links be able to cope with it?

What happens if your provider goes bankrupt, will you follow suit?

Can you get desktop support from a team that has never seen a windows client?

Can you get desktop support at all?

Does your server and work disappear if you power it off by accident? Can you get a local copy for your data easily ? Can someone else get a copy of your data?

If your accountant leaves do you still have access to your financial data ?

If your HR leaves , do you still ....

etc. etc. ad nauseam.

Before jumping in, review and test the waters.

Will it improve your business? Not really, IT does not improve business any more, it is people, processes, and culture that improve businesses. Swapping providers will at best give you fractional overall savings.

The Biggest Challenge For Cloud Computing In 2012

Posted on 02:04 by Unknown
Security always appears top of the list, coupled with what I interpret as confusion over how and what is needed to make best use of the cloud. So in short, for me, a lack of understanding remains the challenge. Whilst security is critical, I feel the need to provide some counter points.

Any computer connected to the Internet is at risk from hackers, whether it is in the cloud or in a private data centre. Would it be true to say that an SME, with necessarily limited resources, is able to better secure its data than say, Amazon? In addition, who says everything needs to be in the cloud? Adopting a cloud computing strategy isn’t an ‘all or nothing’ decision. Data can remain within a data centre or on premise, whilst applications that need to access such data can be based in the cloud. That’s the whole principle behind the different cloud types – private, public or hybrid.

I think that anyone considering a move to the cloud needs to carefully consider their motivations and objectives for doing so, and to question what data and workflows they and their customers will feel happy placing in the cloud. Most importantly, select a vendor that can accommodate your cloud migration strategy, now and in the future. The challenge in 2012 isn’t that of cloud computing, the challenge for cloud vendors or providers of Cloud 'services' is that they need to not only advocate the benefits of their particular offering, but also educate the market on the benefits of cloud, full stop.

Another major challenge will be Bandwidth. It's probably the case that the majority of SME/Bs have 'plenty' of local network bandwidth with which to conduct their in-house operations/business, however, it's also probably the case that they don't have the same bandwidth in their pipe(s) into the 'Cloud' and that could be an awkward bottleneck if you swallowed the cloud philosophy without adequate preparation - which, of course, you'd never do.

For the pessimists amongst you, despite Moore’s Law and Nielson’s Law, there’s always Parkinson’s Law, which prevails: “Usage expands so as to fill all available bandwidth.”

The Reality Of Cloud Based Services

Posted on 03:10 by Unknown
The cloud is a resource consisting of an array of server farms run commercially to be the superhighways and mass storage environments on the web in lieu of local control of such domains.

As a result of the tremendous capacity built into the communications industry during the dot com boom, organizations like Google, Amazon and others are offering these pathways and domains with tremendous economies of scale world wide for the advertising revenue.

Corporations like IBM are capitalizing on the developments by moving from a products to a services market to building tremendous associated revenues by offering entire countries like China, for instance a complete huge server farm and their own capability in the cloud.

This type of development is occurring as we speak all over the globe. Governments like the US are evolving their own version of private clouds for classified domains.

The net effect of all of this is that all the fascination we see presently about terminal hardware applications will be over in the near future. The "Cloud" and SAS will rock the hardware and software world and make access to technology easier for vast populations. Devices to do so will cost pennies on the current dollar or the will be free.

Like the PC makers, the sun is already setting on cell phone devices, associated applications, OTS packaged software and related products. Even though these products are enjoying current popularity They are expensive and will be rapidly overtaken by tight economics and services competition.

Smart, strategic planners are pointing to the future and it is not a hardware and licensed software market - it is service oriented with low cost access and rates. Volume, free products, advertising and shareware will drive it all.

Possible exceptions for a bit longer period of time are the high-end hardware and software technologies in government contracting, which for security reasons must be cloistered, protected and safeguarded. Your friendly government agency will be the last to boot its PC out the window.

The Impact Of Cloud Computing

Posted on 03:55 by Unknown
Cloud computing has injected new life into the telecommunications industry. It has made it quicker, easier and more cost-effective to develop and produce an application. It is also making a greater number of applications, which were once only available to enterprises, also available to SMBs.

It is certainly a disruptive technology, especially when you also consider the growing popularity of social media communication. There are already a myriad of ways to connect/communicate. Some of them could be considered to be fundamentally different to using ‘POTS’. On-line self-service via the Web, for example, has rendered a lot of tedious contact centre activities (e.g., calling by phone) redundant, which has been a good thing. I’d say that’s a fundamental change? The whole gamut of social media activity, from texting to gaming and from Facebook to Twitter, has altered everyone’s perspective.

But if you’re talking about talking – to someone else – then I think we’ll still be doing that for some time to come (until man evolves to be telepathic). How we do it – physically – is another matter and, already, we’re doing it differently; it’s just that a lot of folks don’t even realise it. Broadband (or more exactly, bandwidth) is the key enabler and signposts the road to disruption (via perdition). Ubiquitous broadband should mean we can communicate any way we can, from anywhere we happen to be, but part of that will still involve talking to another human being. Some of those methods will involve ‘voice’ as an application as we will still wish to talk to customers, colleagues and contacts. Many telecommunications (using the word in its absolute broadest sense) applications will be delivered via cloud-based platforms (such as Aculab Cloud) and broadband access is key to such a paradigm becoming real – and disruptive.

Has Cloud Computing Changed The Telecommunications Landscape?

Posted on 03:49 by Unknown
"Cloud Computing" hasn't changed the Telecommunications landscape at all in my opinion.

For starters, the Cloud is only as good as the services feeding into it, and in order to benefit greatly from the "Cloud" you need fast internet service that feeds through a lot of data, this covers both wire-line and wireless alike.

When networks start to become faster, more accessible to the average person/business, and reliability can be assured by the services feeding into it, then we will see a major shift in "Cloud" based services.

So in order for the landscape to change the following needs to be addressed:

1. Cost of entry to the "Cloud" itself.

2. Cost of entry to the services to support such demanding setup .... e.g. Fiber, 4G, and larger volumes of accessible data.

3. Perception of service, meaning that not many currently see the value added in it. The Telco's have not promoted it well, again pointing to how it hasn't changed the landscape in anyway. Its still the same old Telco mentality, "throw it out there and lets see who bites."

I personally believe we are still quite a ways yet from the landscape changing. Networks need to support such a move and businesses need confidence in the service. Without that it will be a slow crawl to change.

A lot of adoption has been for specific services that can "go cloud" - but not much of that changed recently.

Note that many companies looking at the cloud already started with some centralized data centres, and moving your IT to someone elses DC or servers somewhere out in the Internet is not a huge change in how you operate the WAN to get to services.

The flip side to putting aspects of services in the cloud is the current heat and light about taking that to its logical conclusion and putting everything in the cloud - that seems much more of a stretch for many companies with complex IT.

What it will do is drive more demand for bandwidth, and more demand for WAN / Internet access reliability - after the cloud becomes the new IT black hole if you lose access.
